I chose this article because babies fascinate me and I plan to work with babies and children when I graduate college. The purpose of this article is to inform the audience that skin to skin contact with a baby can make the baby happier, make the babies temperature more stable, make the babies heart and breathing normal and can also prevent allergic diseases. The audience is more directed towards mothers of newborns, expecting mothers, and maybe even health care workers that deal with newborn babies. I think that all three rhetorical appeals are being used. Logos, which is the connection of facts, is used because the author states that studies were shown to prove that babies are more stable if they have skin to skin contact with their mothers right after birth. Pathos, which is an appeal to the audience's emotions, is somewhat used because who doesn't have a weak spot for babies. Ethos, which is the trustworthiness of the author, goes back to him stating studies proving the skin to skin theory to actually work. The mode would be visual because it's an article read on the computer and the media is digital. The design is kind of colorful which makes sense because the article is about babies. The style the author uses is more informative, he explains why skin to skin contact is good. This piece could be adapted to a photo essay by using a photo of a mother holding her newborn using skin to skin contact then explaining about skin to skin contact and why mothers should do it in the essay.
