Genres are a way to categorize things such as music, novels, essays, etc. They represent possibilities and can change according to how people use them. They are flexible and don’t necessarily go into specific categories, but more so based on the purpose and the audience. However, they are somewhat categorized by form, style, or subject matter. Genres can help us not only make more efficient decisions when writing but also to communicate successfully when there is similarities within. Rhetoric is the ability to communicate effectively with a purpose. The purpose of most compositions is to either tell a story, inform, or to persuade. A rhetorical situation consists of an issue, an audience, and a set of constraints. To be a great writer you have to know about the genre you’re composing in. It is also helpful to know a little bit about genres as a whole, rather than knowing everything about a couple specific genres.
The last genre that I composed was a movie review. The purpose of my essay was to inform my audience about the movie Happy. The movie is about different people around the world and what makes them happy so in the review I had to explain the different people. I then had to pick which of the people I related to most. In my opinion, writing a movie review is one of the easiest types of papers to write because you just explain and write about information you’re given in the movie.
